Week 37 of 2026: Providence in the Unexpected

Scripture

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”
— Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

Reflection

We all make plans for our lives, but sometimes God allows circumstances to take us in a direction we never expected. A closed door, an unexpected delay, a difficult season, or even a painful loss can leave us wondering, “Why, Lord?”

Yet, God’s providence reminds us that He sees the entire picture when we can see only one small part of it. What appears to be a detour may actually be God’s direction. What feels like an ending may become the beginning of something new.

We see this most clearly in Jesus Christ. His disciples thought His crucifixion was the end, but the cross was actually God’s plan for our redemption. Jesus willingly surrendered Himself to the Father’s will:

“Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”
— Luke 22:42 (KJV)

Because Christ trusted the Father through the cross, we can trust Him through the unexpected circumstances of our own lives.

Real-Life Story: Jim Elliot

Jim Elliot was a young missionary who felt called to take the Gospel to the Waorani people of Ecuador. In 1956, while attempting to establish contact with them, Jim and four other missionaries were killed.

From a human perspective, their mission seemed to have ended in tragedy. But God was not finished. Jim’s wife, Elisabeth Elliot, and others continued reaching out to the Waorani. In time, relationships were established, the Gospel was shared, and some of those people came to know Jesus Christ.

What appeared to be the end became part of a greater story of God’s grace.

Jesus said:

“Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.”
— John 12:24 (KJV)

Jim Elliot’s story reminds us that we may not see the fruit of our obedience immediately, but God can use our faithfulness in ways far beyond what we imagine.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me trust You when things do not happen according to my plans. When I face unexpected changes, disappointments, or difficulties, give me faith to believe that You are still directing my steps.

Help me surrender my will to You and say, “Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Use every circumstance in my life to bring glory to Your name and help me follow You faithfully, wherever You lead. Amen.

Action Step

Think about one unexpected situation in your life. Instead of asking only, “Why did this happen?”, ask:

“Lord Jesus, what are You teaching me, and how can I glorify You through this?”

Trust Him even when you cannot see the whole path.

God’s plan may be unexpected, but His grace is always sufficient. Trust Christ, follow His leading, and leave the outcome in His hands.
