Scripture
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
— Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
Reflection
Much of our life is spent in ordinary moments—going to work, preparing meals, caring for our families, doing household responsibilities, helping others, and simply carrying out the duties of each day. These moments may seem small and unnoticed, but in the hands of God, the ordinary can become an opportunity for His glory.
God does not measure our faithfulness only by the things that appear great in the eyes of people. He sees the heart behind what we do. When we do ordinary things with love, gratitude, faithfulness, and a desire to honor Christ, those things become acts of worship.
Jesus Christ Himself spent many years in the quietness of ordinary life before beginning His public ministry. He lived in Nazareth, worked as a carpenter, obeyed His earthly parents, and walked among ordinary people. Yet His life was perfectly pleasing to the Father.
This reminds us that there is no insignificant place when Jesus is present. Washing dishes, caring for a loved one, working at a job, visiting someone who is lonely, encouraging a friend, or praying quietly can all become meaningful when done in the name of Jesus.
Grace teaches us not to despise ordinary days. Every day is a gift from God, and every moment can become a place where we experience His presence.
Real-Life Story: Eric Liddell
Eric Liddell is remembered around the world as an Olympic champion, but his greatest legacy was not his athletic achievement. It was his faithful life for Jesus Christ.
Liddell was born in China to Scottish missionary parents and later became a gifted runner. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he was expected to compete in the 100-meter race. However, he refused to run because the qualifying race was held on a Sunday, which he regarded as a day set apart for the Lord.
Instead of compromising his conviction, he trusted God. He later competed in the 400-meter race and won the gold medal, setting a world record at the time.
But Liddell’s deepest calling was not the Olympic track. After the Olympics, he returned to China as a missionary. There he taught, preached, served the poor, and faithfully shared the Gospel.
His later years were especially difficult. During World War II, he was interned by the Japanese at Weihsien Internment Camp in China. Even in those difficult circumstances, Liddell continued to serve others. He taught, encouraged the younger people, organized activities, and shared the hope of Christ.
His life became a beautiful picture of grace in the ordinary. He did not need a stadium, a medal, or a great platform to glorify God. Whether he was running a race, teaching children, helping fellow prisoners, or encouraging someone who was discouraged, he sought to live for Jesus.
Eric Liddell died in the internment camp in 1945, but his influence continued long afterward. His life reminds us that greatness in God’s kingdom is not always found in extraordinary accomplishments. Sometimes it is found in quiet faithfulness to Jesus Christ, day after day.
We may sometimes think, “My life is too ordinary to make a difference.”
But Jesus sees what others may never see.
The cup of water given in His name, the prayer whispered in secret, the kindness shown to a neighbor, the encouragement given to someone who is hurting, and the faithful completion of an everyday responsibility—all can become expressions of our love for Christ.
Grace does not always change our circumstances; sometimes grace changes the way we live in them.
Because Jesus Christ is with us, the ordinary can become holy ground.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the grace You give me each day. Help me not to overlook the ordinary moments of my life. Teach me to serve You faithfully in everything I do, whether great or small. May my words, my work, my responsibilities, and my relationships bring glory to Your name. Help me to live each day with gratitude, knowing that Your presence makes even ordinary moments meaningful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action Step
Choose one routine task this week—cleaning, cooking, working, driving, caring for someone, or another daily responsibility. Before doing it, pray:
“Lord Jesus, I offer this to You. Help me do it faithfully and joyfully for Your glory.”
Then perform that ordinary task as an act of worship.
Remember: When Jesus is at the center, there is no ordinary moment without purpose.
