Scripture:
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
— Isaiah 43:18–19 (KJV)
Reflection:
Letting go is often one of life’s greatest challenges. We cling to cherished memories, past successes, old wounds, regrets, disappointments, and unanswered questions. Yet God reminds us that while we can learn from the past, we are not meant to live there. His grace invites us to release what was so that we can embrace what He is doing today.
Sometimes we hold on to guilt over mistakes we cannot undo. At other times, we hold on to grief, pain, or even achievements that keep us from moving forward. God’s promise is that He is always at work, creating new opportunities, new mercies, and new seasons of growth for those who trust Him.
Real Life Story:
Victor Frankl, an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, endured unimaginable suffering during World War II. He lost family members, freedom, possessions, and nearly everything he held dear. In the midst of those dark years, Frankl discovered a profound truth: while circumstances may be beyond our control, we still have the freedom to choose our response.
After the war, Frankl wrote Man’s Search for Meaning, a book that has inspired millions around the world. He observed that healing often begins when people stop being imprisoned by what they cannot change and instead seek purpose in the present. Though he carried the memories of great loss, he refused to let the past define his future.
As Christians, we find an even deeper source of hope in Jesus Christ. At the cross, Jesus bore our sins, failures, and sorrows. Because of His death and resurrection, we are not chained to our past. Christ offers forgiveness for our sins, comfort for our grief, and hope for our future. The Apostle Paul testified to this truth when he wrote, “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before” (Philippians 3:13).
Our ability to let go does not come from our own strength alone. It comes from trusting that Jesus holds our future in His hands. What we surrender to Him is never lost—it is placed under His loving care.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to release the things I cannot change. Forgive me for holding on to regrets, hurts, and fears that keep me from following You fully. Thank You that through Jesus Christ I am forgiven, renewed, and given a living hope. Give me faith to trust Your plans and courage to embrace the new work You are doing in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action Step:
Identify one burden, regret, disappointment, or painful memory from the past that you need to release. Bring it to God in prayer and consciously place it in His hands. Then thank Him for the new thing He is doing in your life today.
